| Growing up, Anko's middle class family couldn't afford any fancy schools, and she was informed from a young age that she would be responsible for her own education outside of the public schooling system. And although they took care of her as well as any other parents, she was always the girl who had to wear the hand-me-downs, and never got the coolest new toys. This bred anger, and that anger got relieved in the form of bullying. More often than not, Anko found herself spending recess in the principal's office-- or in the nurse's office, with any number of various injuries. High school would change all that. It was a typical reform story-- a caring gym teacher took notice, and suggested that Anko join one of the many sports teams. It took a little coaxing-- as well as the mention of the various sports scholarships out there-- but invariably ended up joining the junior varsity football team. She quickly took the sport, turning her aggression there, as well as coming to join the cheer leading squad and the field hockey team. And not only did the amount of disciplinary action against her wane (there were still the odd fights here and there, where she simply couldn't allow someone to mess with her) but her grades seemed to pick up as well. As promised, she received a substantial scholarship to her university of choice. The rest she managed to pay through working and a few small student loans. When faced with the task of choosing a major, it only seemed right to go into Physical Education. She wouldn't admit it, but something deep inside wanted to give someone the same chance she'd been given. For several years after graduation, she floated around the public school system. The remnants of her rough-and-tumble childhood tended to show up in her teaching style, and many administrations would not put up with intimidating the students like she did-- not to mention a few of the other teachers. She would have given up on teaching, if not for a turn of events which brought her to Oshima. |
